Ecommerce is opening new opportunities for developing country micro, small, and mid-size enterprises (MSMEs) to engage in trade, grow, and create new jobs. The Alliance for eTrade Development II Activity (eTrade Alliance) is a Global Development Alliance (GDA) implemented in 2019-26 between USAID and 13 leading private sector partners, and supported by implementing partners Palladium and Nextrade Group, aimed to advance developing country MSMEs' use of ecommerce, including for cross-border trade.

This unique training workshop, held every two years, brings together experienced results measurement practitioners to share lessons learned, solve common problems, exchange practical approaches and build a supportive network. It has gained a reputation for empowering practitioners with cutting edge and yet practical tools and techniques in results measurement to improve program management, impact and accountability.

Humanitarian and development practitioners can help fulfill the promise that markets hold for improving livelihoods by supporting disenfranchised groups’ access to markets as a key pathway for economic empowerment.

The USAID Women’s Economic Empowerment Community of Practice (USAID WEE CoP) learning event:  “Raising the Economic Power of Domestic Workers,”  was on Thursday, January 19, 2023, from 9:00 - 10:00 a.m. Washington, DC time (ET). The Learning Event included remarks from Kelly M. Fay Rodríguez, U.S. Special Representative for International Labor Affairs at the U.S.

The African Development Bank estimates that up to 12 million young people enter African labor markets each year, but only three million formal jobs are created. Because most of these young people can’t afford not to work, the outcome is underemployment and working poverty on a massive scale.   As policymakers, researchers, and the donor community continue to wrestle with the youth employment challenge, does MSD offer any answers?

Living Income Practitioner's Workshop Day 1 (15th June): What drives improvement in farmer income and who can lead and influence these drivers?  ​This day will explore the building blocks for an effective living income program.  We will look at the evidence on the critical drivers of farmer income at the farm, national and sector levels.  The sessions will provide clarity on what is needed to enable farmers to earn a living income and consider this from the perspective and roles of different actors.

USAID Green Invest Asia, Barry Callebaut, and GIZ convene the 6th Sustainable Coconut Roundtable on March 31, 2022 focused on “Securing Coconut Farmers’ Sustainable Livelihoods”.

This webinar will explore the potential for programmes using the market systems approach to be designed to incorporate environmental concerns such as climate change, biodiversity and natural resource depletion.  Drawing on a recent ILO guide, the webinar will explore how greening the MSD approach is compatible with the promotion of decent work and poverty reduction more broadly. Two case studies will be presented: RisiAlbania in Albania and Markets 4 Recycling in Bolivia

The detrimental impact of COVID-19 on the workforce participation and career ambition of women and ethnic or racial minority groups is well documented across many sectors, but there is notably limited evidence from the international development sector. The Feed the Future Market Systems and Partnerships (MSP) Activity sought to remedy this oversight by investing in understanding the specific ways in which the global pandemic is impacting the current and future pipeline of senior leaders on market systems development (MSD) activities.

The U.S. Overseas Cooperative Development Council and its members are pleased to co-sponsor the international track at this year’s Cooperative IMPACT Conference, October 4-7, 2021. This is a free opportunity to learn how cooperatives around the world are innovating for impact, strengthening communities and building resilience in the face of climate change. This is the third year partnering with NCBA CLUSA to offer a dedicated international program track.

Research shows that current approaches to supporting rural employment are having a limited impact, particularly when compared to the scale of rural unemployment. As a result, BHA partners are increasingly considering alternative approaches, including incorporating the principles of market systems development (MSD) into rural employment programs to bring about more sustainable systems change. Though there is limited evidence to date, there are promising signs, and the approach has been successfully used by a small number of programs.

 The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) Green Invest Asia program along with global cacao manufacturer Barry Callebaut, and the German development service provider, GIZ, will convene buyers of coconut and coconut oil products on-line September 29th  from 4pm-6pm (ICT) for the 5th Sustainable Coconut Roundtable.
