Since the beginning of the year, the growth of remittances has continued a steady or increasing flow. Moreover, technological innovation is slowly making inroads into money transfers with pilot efforts in different countries and through different payment systems. In this issue, we feature a guest article on mobile transfers, identifying some of the efforts and issues arising as this emerging technology becomes accessible for money transfers. The research piece on money sent to pay for funerals is an illustration of the link between symbolic and material practices associated with remittances. We conclude this issue with a brief country profile of India with a special focus on the state of Kerala.
