With the growing recognition that not all low-income people are entrepreneurs, but all people need and use savings, many microfinance institutions and other pro-poor financial institutions are offering secure, convenient deposit services. With savings accounts, the world’s poor look for low transaction costs and appropriate terms and conditions, including frequency of deposits, quick access to funds, and interest rates. Microfinance institutions that offer good savings services usually attract far more savers than borrowers.
