Public-Private Partnerships for Family Planning Commodities

Many governments and donors support the use of public-private partnerships to distribute publicly managed commodities through the private health sector to overcome barriers to access for the full range of family planning methods. This brief draws on country experiences with commodity partnerships for family planning in Kenya, Nigeria, and Tanzania. It documents approaches used to place government-managed commodities into the hands of private providers and ultimately the women seeking the method.

Sauti Trade Insights COVID-19 Bulletin

COVID-19 has imposed extreme challenges for East Africa’s micro and small enterprise traders. The Sauti Trade Insights COVID-19 Bulletin leverages Sauti East Africa's unique analytical perspective to document traders’ changes in business behaviour in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. We present key findings on the economic impacts of COVID-19 on traders, drawing on behavioural insights from our mobile-based market information platforms in Kenya and Rwanda. 

Agricultural Productivity Context: Promoting Agriculture, Governance, and the Environment (PAGE) Project

The PAGE project worked with smallholder cocoa producers—most of whom were vulnerable, including war widows and youths—to address production-to-market transactions and develop competitive agricultural and rural enterprises using a market systems approach. This case study highlights the importance of the facilitation role of the development organization to ensure that stakeholder workshops take place. In the project, a national level stakeholder summit took place to address the constraints and opportunities of the national cocoa value chain in Sierra Leone.

Pushing the Employment Frontiers for Africa's Rural and Urban Youth

Sub-Saharan Africa’s population is growing at more than twice the pace of any other region. Although the overall rate of population expansion has been gradually declining for decades, the absolute number of working-age people will grow by approximately 14 million next year alone (Lam and Leibbrandt 2013). By 2030, when children born this year reach their 16th birthdays, the corresponding labor pool will have grown by 21 million people annually.

Market Systems Innovations – From the Field

DFID has been one of the leading agencies in Making Markets Work for the Poor (M4P), a market systems approach that works with the private sector to catalyze changes in markets that benefit the poor. DFID’s flagship M4P project in Kenya is the Market Assistance Programme (MAP), managed by Mike Field, a recognized leader in value chain and M4P approaches. Field and his team are exploring innovative, scalable solutions in cross-cutting systems and specific value chains.

Pathways out of Poverty Case Study: AMPATH: Reaching the Vulnerable Using Value Chain Development

USAID commissioned a series of case studies to examine interventions and approaches to creating pathways out of poverty that either “pushed” the very poor towards productive engagement in markets and/or “pulled” the poor into markets. This case study, written by the Indiana Institute for Global Health Kenya, examines the Academic Model for Providing Access to Health Care (AMPATH) in Western Kenya which piloted a sequenced graduation approach to market integration.

Value Chain Activities for Conflict-Affected Populations in Guinea

This study is part of a series of guided case studies aimed at exploring whether and under what conditions the application of a value chain approach can help accelerate economic growth in conflict-affected environments. Using the value chain framework, the study looks at interventions in the groundnuts sector of a larger integrated community development program called “Social and Economic Recovery through Community Development Initiatives” (SER-CD).

Early Lessons Targeting Populations with a Value Chain Approach

The value chain approach has been applied with a pro-poor focus for many years by different donors. By applying this framework to specific target populations or to specific settings, such as post-conflict, USAID takes the approach one step further by tailoring interventions to meet the needs and circumstances of specific groups. A unique aspect of this approach is that it takes a market-driven methodology and applies it under circumstances of regional instability, or when tribal tensions, disease, or psychological trauma are prevalent.

Value Chain Framework and the Lulu Livelihoods Programme

This study is part of a series of guided case studies aimed at exploring whether and under what conditions the application of a value chain approach can help accelerate economic growth in conflict-affected environments. The focus of this case is the Lulu Livelihoods Programme implemented by MEDIC in Sudan’s shea butter industry. It details the strategies pursued by the program to cope with the ongoing conflict and presents research findings based on the four hypotheses tested.

Cotton Value Chain Case Study for Northern Uganda

Formalization of the Warm Milk Channel in Kenya: A Study in Effective Facilitation (Presentation)

SITE’s work in Kenya's warm milk trade has been an iterative process, relying on numerous types of facilitation to address each challenge as it unfolded, incentivizing a fragmented informal sector without lead firms to collaborate, improve its performance and increase the benefits to its participants. By demonstrating the benefits to regulation and formalization, there has been significant upgrading in the value chain, crowding in of new entrants, and substantial increases in the volumes of milk traded and profitability for the actors.
