A Pro-Poor Analysis of the Shrimp Sector in Bangladesh (Presentation)

Sarah Gammage of Development and Trainings Services Inc. presented 'A Pro-Poor Analysis of the Shrimp Sector in Bangladesh'. The seminar was the 12th installment of the Linking Small Firms to Competitiveness Strategies Breakfast Seminar Series sponsored by the USAID Microenterprise Development office. Gammage spoke about the Greater Access to Trade Expansion (GATE) Project for USAID Bangladesh, which explores the nature of production and the terms and conditions of employment along the shrimp value chain in Bangladesh.

During her presentation, Gammage highlighted the opportunities in the Bangladesh shrimp sector to improve market outcomes, raise productivity and wages, and foster pro-poor growth in the sector. She also focused on the project’s gendered value chain analysis, highlighting the different positions and contributions of men and women across the chain. Offering some potential solutions to the obstacles faced by the industry, Gammage discussed ways of increasing the income and assets for those lower down the value chain, as well as how to improve the terms of trade for the industry.
