This case study presents the experience of the Association Professionnelle des Systèmes Financiers Décentralisés de Côte d’Ivoire (APSFD-Côte d’Ivoire) and its work to integrate social performance management (SPM) into microfinance practice in the Ivory Coast. This project, carried out under the auspices of the MFC Social Performance Start-up Fund, built awareness and capacity for social performance management (SPM) and transparency among members of APSFD-Côte d’Ivoire. The project was designed to respond to the sector crisis in the Ivory Coast, which was marked by a lack of client confidence in MFIs; a lack of access to funding sources for MFIs; a widespread portfolio loss due to general rioting; and a mission drift in the face of a challenging economic environment.
