Global Value Chains, Industrial Upgrading and Jobs in Large Emerging Economies: A Comparison of China, India, and Mexico (Presentation)

Dr. Gary Gereffi presented “Global Value Chains, Industrial Upgrading and Jobs in Large Emerging Economies: A Comparison of China, India, and Mexico." The seminar was the 28th installment of the Linking Small Firms to Competitiveness Strategies Breakfast Seminar Series sponsored by the USAID Microenterprise Development office. Dr. Gereffi began the presentation with an overview of global value chain analysis and upgrading. He compared international upgrading trajectories for different types of exports from Mexico, Costa Rica, China, India, and South Korea to the world market. The cases of China and Mexico were examined in greater detail as well as the textiles, apparel, and IT industry trends in India. Dr. Gereffi closed with the challenges facing the global market and the opportunities that are present.
