This study is part of a series of guided case studies aimed at exploring whether and under what conditions the application of a value chain approach can help accelerate economic growth in conflict-affected environments. The case study looks at the role of the value chain approach in the work of USAID’s Rebuilding Agricultural Markets Program (RAMP) and Accelerating Sustainable Agriculture Program (ASAP) projects in Afghanistan in order to determine how the value chain approach can be used to rebuild markets, how it can be adapted to the need for quick action, and how strategic subsidies can be used with minimal or no market distortion.
