The Clients and Markets research seeks to promote economic growth with poverty reduction by increasing opportunities for beneficial participation of MSEs in value chains. The research hypotheses in this document are designed to improve our understanding of how firm owners respond to the interaction of governance, risk, profits, information, transaction costs, and social capital. The hypotheses—which focus on vertical relationships, horizontal relationships, and upgrading—provide a framework for the Clients and Markets research agenda and are continually refined through field and desk studies.
