Making Cents Conference Video Interview: Technology as a catalyst and enabler

Technology panelists share their insights from the plenary, "How Is Technology Causing Breakthroughs in Youth Economic Opportunity?" at the Making Cents Global Youth Economic Opportunities Conference on Thursday, September 8, 2011. Panelists in the video include Wayan Vota, Senior Director, Inveneo; Jacob Korenblum, Co-Founder and President, Souktel Inc.; and Peter Broffman, Manager of Informal Education, Corporate Affairs Group, Intel Corporation.

 

Bio: Wayan Vota

 

Wayan Vota is a technology expert focused on appropriate information and communication technologies (ICT) for rural and underserved areas of the developing world. He is currently the Senior Director of the Inveneo Certified ICT Partner Program, where he is developing a network of entrepreneurial information and communication technology companies focused on installing and maintaining rural and remote technology deployments across Africa and Asia. One aspect of that effort is ICTworks - an online community for ICT practitioners in the developing world. Vota also develops unique, successful communities of practice through engaging, authoritative online content, and on- and offline organization through multiple distribution channels, including convening the Technology Salon, exploring the nexus of ICT and development; publishing OLPC News, the premier independent online community on One Laptop Per Child; and developing the Educational Technology Debate for infoDev at the World Bank.

Jacob Korenblum

Jacob Korenblum is a co-founder and president of Souktel Inc., the Middle East's first service that uses cell phone technology to connect job-seekers with employers. He holds an Ed.M. from Harvard University, where he also served as a Harvard Reynolds Foundation Fellow in Social Enterprise. A fluent speaker of Arabic, Korenblum has worked in the employment and emergency aid sectors in Palestine, Morocco, Egypt and Jordan--as well as East and West Africa. His work as a Souktel co-founder has been profiled by CNBC, the New York Times, Reuters, the UK's Guardian newspaper, and Canada's leading daily, the National Post. Most recently, Korenblum has facilitated workshops and made presentations at the US State Department (2011), The World Bank Human Development Forum (2011), The Clinton Global Initiative meeting (2010), and the Tech Awards (2010). 

Peter Broffman

Peter Broffman is Manager of Informal Education in Intel’s Corporate Affairs Group. Peter is also worldwide program manager for the Intel® Learn Program, which reaches more than 250,000 young learners each year. Over the course of his career with Intel, Broffman has served as Executive Director of the Intel Foundation, K-12 Education Manager, and was program manager for the Intel® Teach Getting Started and Intel® Teach Skills for Success courses. He has been involved in initiating many of Intel’s key education programs, including Intel® Teach, the Intel Computer Clubhouse Network, and the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair. Prior to his work with Intel, Broffman managed Social Policy for Security Pacific Bank in Seattle, WA. He was responsible for the bank’s corporate charitable and business contributions, scholarship programs, and community relations. He has a law degree, and spent eight years as a consultant to government and the private sector on employee rights in the workplace, employment discrimination, and youth employment and training.
