2012 SEEP Conference: David Baguma on the history and goal of microfinance

At the 2012 SEEP Annual Conference, held November 4-8 in Arlington, VA, David Baguma, Executive Director of the Association of Microfinance Institutions of Uganda (AMFIU), speaks of the history of SEEP and recognizes the early stages of microfinance when institutions were just emerging and the subsequent shift into commercialization. Baguma expresses his appreciation of the theme for the 2012 SEEP Conference as it represents the core of microfinance. He reinforces that the goal of these conferences should be to create sustainable income for rural communities in the hope that poverty will be overcome.

Bio: David Baguma, AMFIU

David Baguma has been Executive Director for AMFIU since September 2004. Under his leadership enough resources have been mobilized that AMFIU is considered worldwide as a successful vibrant Network in Africa. He is among key instrumental persons in building and shaping the MF industry in Uganda. Baguma has over 15 years experience in Microfinance at designing, implementation and oversight levels. In 1993 he started a MFI in Feed The Children Uganda [FTCU) called Community Banking Program and by the time he left the organization it had active clientele of 15,000 and a portfolio of over one million US dollars in 2004. Baguma holds an MA in Education from Calvin College/Seminary.
